Lute FP This is fantastic. Psychedelic rock with heavy pop sensibilities, done the way only the Japanese could do it. Extremely clever and complex songs that always remain catchy. Tons of rhythm and harmony. For fans of Goat, Dengue Fever, etc.

Weirdo Shrine On Stray Birds From The Far East the band mixes indigenous Japanese folk music with modern psych rock. A short and varied bunch, these six songs in thirty minutes will obviously appeal to fans of Japanese psych like Kikagaku Moyo, but also to more danceable, frivolous modern psych like Yin Yin, and uptempo psychedelic rock like Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. Tō Yō shows all these sides, and adds a dash of character that is very distinguishably their own. Perfect summer music! Favorite track: Soaring.

Kirk Gauthier If you know anything about my taste in music, then you’re already well aware that I’m an absolute sucker for Japanese psych rock. I will absolutely devour just about anything from bands like Acid Mothers Temple or Flower Travellin’ Band. With a whole lot more than just a toe firmly planted in ‘70s classic rock, these songs aren’t as trippy or weird as you might expect, but there’s that signature Japanese joie de vivre that makes this album so fresh and exciting. Don’t miss out!! Favorite track: Hyu Dororo.

Tō Yō, the Tokyo-based psychedelic quartet, has announced their debut record Stray Birds From the Far East—a dreamy, pop-infused psych/acid rock concept album about nostalgia for a place yet to be discovered—to be released through King Volume Records on August 18, 2023.
The Tō Yō sound is simultaneously unique yet familiar—but it’s also moving. “Our psychedelic sound is at times violent and at times naive,” says vocalist and guitarist Masami Makinom, “but we also believe our sound is meant to awaken the most primitive senses in order to sublimate
the rise of the soul and its uncontrollable impulses.”

Tō Yō is an ambitious band with an ambitious vision, so it’s no surprise some of their biggest influences are known for complex, groundbreaking visions; Far East Family Band, J. A. Seazer, Flower Travellin' Band, Kikagaku Moyo, YU Grupa, Ali Farka Touré, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin,
and Goat all show up in the list of the band’s most important influences.

What I like about Draken too is that the music is fierce but not too macho, aggressive but not dumb. The most important feature is masterfull riffage though, and writing songs that stick in your brain and make you yearn for the time you can bang your head along in front of the stage.
